Minutes

 

Mark Musick, Chairman of the Workforce Investment Board, called the meeting to order and welcomed attendees and special guests. Attending board members then participated in an “ice breaker” activity and introduced each other.

Debra Lyons provided a briefing of the Board’s Mission and Strategic Planning Initiatives.  A copy of her presentation was included in each board member’s meeting materials folder.

Highlights of Debra’s presentation included:

  • Governor Perdue’s vision for workforce development (WFD) in the state of Georgia
  • Workforce Investment Board mission is to develop a strategic plan of action to recommend to the Governor that supports the WFD vision and enables it to become a reality.
  • In an ideal State, Workforce Development is an enterprise whereby workforce development and economic development are aligned and demand driven.
  • Proactive workforce development supports linking workforce development and education, training and training support services.
  • In an ideal State, education aligns all educational sectors to maximize student progression and success pre-school through college and/or to work and beyond.
  • In an ideal State, training engages and encourages all individuals and groups to improve knowledge and skills within a fully coordinated system of training and support services.
  • The opportunity for this workforce investment board is to collaboratively develop a statewide WFD strategic plan that embraces all of the “ideal state” points presented, addresses the “current state” of affairs presented, and supports the value that relationships, linkages and alignments bring to the overall efficiency of the workforce development system. 
  • The next steps for the Governor’s Office of Workforce Development is support the strategic planning efforts of this board, map workforce development efforts and funding streams, develop and implement communication strategies to primary stakeholders,  and recommend common measures for performance.

 

Wes Wynens, lead the board in group sessions on the following:

In thinking about… Linking education and the traditional workforce development system, and aligning the system with economic development needs for the state, its regions and communities… What successes can be identified? What gaps or issues need to be addressed? and, What ideas exists about how to build on a success, close the gap, or improve the functioning of the system?

Each group summarized their discussion and presented to the full board their findings.

A summary of these reports will help to organize and direct subsequent strategic planning activities of the Board.

The next meeting is scheduled for June 1, 2006 at Timber Ridge Conference Center.
